About Cebiotech

The Center for Biosecurity and Biomolecular Technology is anchored at Makerere University and COVAB, turning biomolecular science into health security for a safer planet and prosperous communities.

Who we are

CeBioTech, the Centre for Biosecurity and Biomolecular Technology, is a Makerere-anchored research and manufacturing center working to make Africa self-reliant in health security. Born out of Uganda’s Ministry of Health and Makerere University’s COVAB, we design antigens, produce vaccines and diagnostic kits, run pre-clinical trials, and strengthen the biosurveillance systems that catch outbreaks early. Our ventures from RePROVaD’s vaccine and diagnostic pipeline to CLARF’s shared pre-clinical facility turn cutting-edge biomolecular science into tools made on the continent for the continent. We’re scientists, engineers, and public-health specialists united by one conviction: that the next generation of vaccines, tests, and safeguards against biological threats should be designed, built, and owned in Africa.

Our mission

To protect communities from biological threats by building the biomolecular science, the products and the people that make Africa self-reliant in health security closing the gap between research and tools people can actually use.

Our vision

A continent that detects, defends against and contains disease threats on its own terms with diagnostics, vaccines and reagents designed, produced and validated at home.

Safer planet, prosperous communities. Recombinant proteins, vaccines and diagnostics built locally  reducing reliance on imports and the months and cost of sending candidates abroad, and keeping critical capability on the continent.

Why it matters

Health security, built at home

Every test imported and every candidate sent abroad costs Africa time and money during the moments that matter most. CeBioTech closes that gap.

Faster response

Locally made diagnostics and reagents mean surveillance and outbreak response no longer wait on imports or shipping.

One Health reach

Human, livestock and wildlife health are tackled together from Mpox and COVID-19 to tick-borne and swine diseases.

Sovereign capacity

Training scientists and building cGMP-grade infrastructure so the continent owns its biosecurity, not rents it.

CAPACITY BUILDING

Training & education

Every venture is also a training ground. We build the next generation of African biotech scientists through hands-on work in protein production, diagnostics development and pre-clinical research.

Lab attachments

Graduate and undergraduate placements across the ventures.

Technical workshops

Protein expression, assay development and GLP practice.

Regional consultancy

Drug-efficacy and diagnostics support for partners.

Work with us

Funding partners, manufacturers, research institutions, and students, there is a way to get involved with every venture.
